Draft Logo Project

For this project, I decided to make a logo for my sorority’s philanthropy which is building strong girls. This is also my topic so that is how my logo relates to it. The logo is three silhouettes of girls standing in a strong, confident stance with the title that says, “We build strong girls.” When creating the girl’s silhouette, I was inspired by a statue in New York City known as the “fearless girl.” She stands before an intimidating bull but has a strong and fearless stance. I knew I wanted to have a girl standing with her hands on her hip, and that’s when I thought of this statue and what it represents. I knew I wanted to include it in my project.

Before I began, I reviewed last weeks tracing tutorial as research. My design process started with created a circle while holding down “shift”. I then added my text and then gave it an arc effect so it would flow with the shape of the circle. Next, I found a photo of the “fearless girl” online. I used the pen tool to outline the shape of the girl. I used the shape builder tool and used vectors to make sure it could be scalable. After this, I copied this to create three girls. I adjected the shape and size of each to make them appear slightly different. I then used the linear center align tool to these girl shapes. I decided to create 3 girls because the number 3 is significant to Gamma Phi Beta. I also think having 3 girls gives balance to the logo look. I then added the Greek letters of Gamma Phi Beta to add detail and familiarity. Lastly, I used the gradient tool to the circle background to create a gradient look. I used pink because it is Gamma Phi Beta’s color and also is associated with girls.

Final Graphic Design Project

For the Graphic Design Project, I created a poster that I believe shows how Gamma Phi Beta builds strong girls. My topic for COM 210 is my sorority’s philanthropy – Building Strong Girls. I included photographs of myself and my sorority sisters along with the text that reads “We Build Strong Girls.” The photos demonstrate confidence, sisterhood, and happiness. These qualities strongly relate to building strong people. My hope is for my audience to see these photos and for them to think about our philanthropy.

The photo of myself was taken by my friend Hannah Balcos. The photo of the three of my friends in the red dress was taken by my friend Rylie Dick. The photo of my friend on Bid Day was taken by Mikayla Mars. And the last photo was taken by Alysse Johnson.

In Photoshop, the first thing I did was make the background a light pink using the paint bucket tool. I decided to use light pink because some of the photos already have pink in it and I thought it would flow well with the photos. Light pink is also one of Gamma Phi Beta’s colors, so it fits in well. The next thing I did was add the four photos I thought demonstrated strong girls. I used four photos to show similarity. I decided to use the stroke and drop shadow effects on these photos to give it a casual look to the poster. On top of the poster, I put the text “Gamma Phi Beta” and used the arc tool to give it some shape. Under that, I put the text “We Build Strong Girls.” This was the focus of my poster because it’s our philanthropic mission that we believe very strongly in. Next, at the bottom, I put a text that reads “she is confident, happiness, love, a leader, a true and constant friend, and a sister. She is Gamma Phi Beta.” These are all qualities that our sorority values. I think this poster correlates well with my topic because it is a visual representation of what our philanthropy is about.

It looks like it could be on a billboard in someone’s room which I like because that shows familiarity and comfort. In the middle I have the text in all caps that reads “we build strong girls.” I used the drop shadow and bold effect on this to make the letters really stand out because I want it to be the audience’s first focus point. Lastly, I decided to add captions to two of the photos. On the photo of two of my close friends, I put the text that says, “True and constant friends.” Not only are these friends true and constant, but this is also an important saying that Gamma Phi Beta women value. The other caption is under the photo of myself that says “building confidence.” I added this text because our philanthropy is all about building self-confidence for elementary aged girls and it’s something we value. Also, I have built a lot of confidence by joining Gamma Phi Beta and I think the photo of me shows this. I think this poster correlates well with my topic because it is a visual representation of what our philanthropy is about.

Introduction To My Topic – Building Strong Girls

My topic of this blog is my sorority’s philanthropy – Building Strong Girls. I am a member of Gamma Phi Beta here at Washington State University. I decided to make this my topic because building strong girls is something I am very passionate about and am proud of. I also see the important impacts it has on anyone involved with Building Strong Girls philanthropy. Gamma Phi Beta’s across the country build strong girls through a program called “Girls on the Run.” This program is for elementary-aged girls and it’s all about building healthy lifestyle skills, self-confidence, and self-respect. The end goal of the program is to have the girls run a 5K, but the real goal is to leave the girls with valuable life lessons. I plan to collect original materials by working with my sorority to take photos at program events, interviewing the women who mentor these girls and record video footage of our philanthropy events. I plan on working hands-on with our philanthropy.

One idea I have for unit 1, which is creating a graphic design poster, is having a group of young girls in the “superman” pose with the title “we build strong girls” in pink letters. I want to include Gamma Phi Beta’s letters as well. For unit 2, which is creating a logo, an idea I have for that is a silhouette of the side of a girl’s face with the letters building strong girls. Another idea I have is for unit 3, which is an audio recording. My idea is to interview one of my sisters who went through Girls on the Run as a girl and what building strong girls means to her.
