Occupation #1: Film and Video Editor

What is interesting:

I think it would be fun to edit movies/tv shows. I like to watch films and one of my favourite hobby is photography and editing. I catch myself analyzing films and tv shows and how well things are done or what I would do differently to improve it. I also enjoy music and sound editing which is very crucial in film creation.

Occupation #2: Sustainability specialists

What is interesting:

I care about the environment and appreciate the environment so if I could make a big impact on it, that would be something I would be interested in. I would like to work with companies and small businesses and their use of plastic waste. I could give suggestions on how to reduce their carbon footprint as well as spread awareness to the public about sustainability.

Occupation #3: Wedding Event Planner

What is interesting:

I enjoy organizing events and seeing everything come together. I love working with people, especially for happy occasions such as weddings. This career would align with my creativity and communication values. Weddings take a lot of time and dedication to come together and I would love to have the opportunity to make a career out of it.

              I have developed a variety of skills from my internship at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). My internship is in the marketing and communications department, and I work in the website team.

              I have developed planning and organizational skills in my internship. For example, I helped contribute goals for the organization by helping contribute ideas in revising the company’s mission statement. I also learned how to prioritize and delegate tasks because I was given 5-6 tasks per day of updates and edits to the website. How I completed this was by looking at the due dates and organizing the priorities of these tasks. From there I would do the most important updates first and then go through which due date was closest. Lastly, I also have skills in conducting meetings because I would host weekly meetings as an intern leader for new interns across the company via zoom.

              I have developed interpersonal/teamwork and teambuilding skills as well. For example, with the website rebranding, my coworkers and I were working toward a common goal of meeting deadlines for each part of the website and preparing presentations to present to the executive board. I understood my strengths and weaknesses as well as my coworkers’ which was helpful when delegating different tasks.

              With research and investigation skills, this is the category that I feel was most impactful. When I started my internship, I did not quite know what I was getting into. It turned out that I had to research and learn about coding. I took a 500-hour course on my own in order to get up to speed with my team. I also continue to research other companies websites and how they organize their sites. I also had a book on coding and website building that I would often refer to when given new edits and tasks to do. I found this helpful because I was able to figure skills out on my own instead of relying on my co-workers to teach me.

              For critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills, I was able to implement sound decisions during our group peer-review meetings. I learned that even if your ideas during peer review are not taken, just having a conversation helps the website designers. It helps when there are multiple points of view because our audience has a variety of views as well. This also relates to the skill of explaining unpopular decisions to others which is a skill I now have.

              My verbal and written communication skills have improved as well. Each week we had multiple different meetings where I was expected to contribute. At the beginning of my internship, this was intimidating, but with each week and more practice, I was able to explain ideas concisely and clearly. I believe I have the skill of debating issues without being perceived as abrasive to others effectively. I remember talking with my advisor to make sure he also believed I had this skill, and he said I did indeed.

              Lastly, I have decision-making and leadership skills because of this internship. I was able to recognize and communicate if there were any issues with a webpage, define the problem, and demonstrate how the problem can be fixed. I also developed multitasking very well and was capable of handling more than one problem at a time because of my organizational skills, and taking on new tasks because of my leadership skills.

Overall, the internship at SEL whose values such as communication, quality, and creativity align with my personal values. It is important for me to find people and work that align with my personal values so that I am passionate and relate to them.

Final Portfolio

Here is my final portfolio that includes 6 of my projects that I completed over this semester for COM COMSTRAT 381. I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Audition, and InDesign. This course with Ben Pingel at WSU has taught me a variety of skills in these platforms as well as design principals and advertising techniques. Reflection

I have really enjoyed taking COM 210 and creating this blog. My favorite project during the semester was the final video project because I’ve always wanted to learn how to create videos in a professional program like Adobe Premiere and be able to do special effects and transitions like we were taught to do. Also, this was my favorite because I had a lot of fun filming the videos at one of my favorite events that my sorority puts on. I was proud that I could capture and share with others about this event that is so fun and means a lot to me and others. I learned how to work with Premiere in the tutorials and discovered tools and gained skills in Premiere. I also had a lot of fun making the tutorials. I also enjoyed using those tools in my final video project on my own. I enjoyed all the programs we worked with, but Adobe Premiere was my favorite because there was so much to do with the program to make my project creative and interesting. The skills I learned in this course are how to manage my time well, organize my materials on a computer well, and how to use and create projects with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, and Premiere. I feel as if I can use all these skills and programs in the future at a potential job or in my own free time. I will be taking more COM classes that most likely will have more projects and presentations where I can use these programs effectively. The skills like how to manage my time well and organization will help with any potential career I may have in the future. I do not know of any skills that I wish I had learned but did not learn in this course. I found the adobe website and YouTube were helpful resources to use in the course because they would have addition tutorial videos available if I needed more help or wanted to learn more tools in a program. Thank you so much for following this blog throughout this semester. I had so much fun learning and creating the projects that I did, and I hope to continue to practice and strengthen my skills in Adobe programs to create more media projects.

Final Video

For this project, I decided to capture one of my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropy events called Moonball. I took several clips from different angles during the basketball tournament, interviewed a sorority member, and recorded a voice-over of me explaining a little bit of the event.

After getting feedback from peers and doing some self-reflection on my own work after my draft video, I had a couple of things I wanted to do in my final draft. Firstly, I wanted to change my background music to something more fitting with my draft. I will then add audio transitions to the music. I also wanted to fix my video transitions, so it is smoother and less choppy.

The first step of my editing process was to watch through all the video recordings I took and select the ones with the most interesting or active moments. I then wrote out what I wanted to say and recorded it on my smartphone. My description was not as long as my video, so I added music to play throughout the video. The music is from Mus Open called “Mangore Maxixe” by Agustin Barrios Mangore. I adjusted the music sound level so that it was louder when I wasn’t talking and quieter when I was talking. I also added transitions to the beginning and end of the video with an effect called exponential fade, so it was a smooth audio transition.

Next, I added some effects in my video transitions. I first added a title and added a fading transition called cross-dissolve to the slide. I also added an effect called dip to black to the end text that says thanks for watching to add a smooth ending. On the second to last video clip, I added the effect of zooming in as the video plays using the scale tool. I wanted to do this because you can closely see the banner that says building strong girls and the jump ball toss. The sun rays were also a nice touch so I wanted it to be emphasized. I added another transition between two clips called page peel. I also used cross dissolve, and slide for other transition so that all the clips had a transition.

The significance of the elements in my design are it clearly shows what the event is about and how many people participate in the event. It also shows the impact of our philanthropy has on the community as well as our sorority. It hopefully inspires more to participate or learn more about Girls on the Run and what impacts that has on young girls.

Overall, I think my final video shows my skills of premiere and what my sororities philanthropy is all about. I think the background music fits in well because it’s a happy upbeat tune which is what the event is about. The event is uplifting and encouraging to see that many people in our college town care about young girls in the pullman community.
